Distribution Network Engineer

About the role

The Distribution Network Engineer will lead the detailed design and implementation of approximately 542 km of medium‑voltage and low‑voltage distribution networks in Eritrea, ensuring safe, efficient delivery in line with utility requirements and standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead route reconnaissance, detailed surveys and preparation of network route maps, profiles and construction drawings.
• Prepare and review MV/LV distribution designs, perform load assessments, conductor and transformer sizing, voltage‑drop and technical‑loss studies.
• Develop pole spotting schedules, specify conductors, transformers, protection and metering equipment.
• Prepare bills of quantities, technical specifications, material schedules and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with substations, generation sources, mini‑grids and customer connection points.
• Supervise construction quality, verify works against designs and standards, and support testing and commissioning.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 10 years experience in MV/LV distribution network design, construction supervision and commissioning.
• At least 7 years in rural electrification or mini‑grid programmes.
• Proven experience on projects of 100 km+ MV/LV networks.
• Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer registration preferred.

Required skills

• AutoCAD, GIS, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PLS‑CADD or equivalent design software.
• Knowledge of IEC and utility distribution standards.
• Load estimation, conductor and transformer sizing, voltage‑drop analysis, technical‑loss assessment.
• Protection coordination, earthing, surge protection and switching equipment design.
• Construction supervision, quality control, testing and commissioning procedures.
